8Ed Woodward has a busy summer on his hands if he wants to snare Manchester United’s top targetsAs was exclusively revealed on talkSPORT 2 on Thursday morning, United are lining up monster bids for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. As well as that, Crystal Palace wonderkid Aaron Wan-Bissaka is reportedly on the shopping list as the Reds look to bolster their backline. The England Under-21 international has been one of the most impressive players in the Premier League this season and is also wanted by Arsenal.Prising the superstar duo of Rakitic and Koulibaly will also not be an easy task. But, should Woodward succeed, United’s squad will certainly be one of the strongest in the division.
8Wan-Bissaka’s performances at Selhurst Pakr has drawn plenty of admiring glances from bigger teams But how on Earth would potential new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be able to squeeze all of United’s superstars into a matchday squad, let alone a starting XI?Below are some potential ways the Red Devils could line up next season with their reported transfer targets.
AN HOMAGE TO THE FERGUSON YEARS (4-4-2)
8United would have the pace and creativity to hurt teams on the break and break down stubborn defencesSince taking over in December, Solskjaer has been keen to instil some of the values into the current Manchester United side which Sir Alex Ferguson held dear.Be it wearing suits on matchday or even letting the former boss deliver team talks, the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ is a stickler for tradition. So what better way to start his potentially permanent position than by re-introducing the formation which made the Red Devils so successful? With the highly-impressive Luke Shaw and mooted new signing Wan-Bissaka on the flanks, Paul Pogba and Rakitic would be tasked with controlling the midfield.
8Rakitic is the metronome in midfield for BarcelonaIt remains to be seen who would partner Koulibaly at the back, with Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly contenders for the final starting berth.Going forward, there is room for versatility, with Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial all capable of playing wide or alongside Romelu Lukaku.
GIVING POGBA LICENSE TO ROAM (4-2-3-1)
8Paul Pogba could be unstoppable next seasonSince Jose Mourinho’s sacking in December, it seems as though Old Trafford has been fumigated of the toxic atmosphere which threatened to completely derail the season.Considering Mourinho labelled Pogba a ‘virus’ on the squad, the World Cup winner is now spearheading Solskjaer’s revolution.Since the Norwegian took over, Pogba has scored nine goals and bagged six assists in all competitions and looks a completely different player from the one sat on the bench as United slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Mourinho’s final game against Liverpool. If given the license to roam, the 25-year-old is lethal. With Rakitic anchoring the midfield alongside the revitalised Ander Herrera, United could well see even more improvement from their 89million man.
POSSESSION IS THE NAME OF THE GAME (4-3-3)
8Having possession is one thing, but this is a team which would know how to pick teams apartThe Premier League title race between Manchester City and Liverpool must be torture for United fans.As Gary Neville so eloquently put, “It’s like having a choice of two blokes you want to nick your wife!”With Jurgen Klopp’s side preferring to play heavy metal football on the counter and City opting to pass teams to death, United may well seek to find a balance of the two next season. With Rakitic sitting deepest of the midfield trio, United have the perfect midfielder to orchestrate attacks from the ‘quarter-back role’.
8Rashford and Martial will be crucial to United next season, regardless of who is brought inWith the energetic Herrera playing a box-to-box role and Pogba getting forward when he can, United would certainly not struggle to keep the ball in midfield. If they are penned back however, the emergence of Lukaku as a genuine target man could supplement the blistering pace provided by Martial and Rashford out wide to counter attack teams.Koulibaly is extremely adept at taking the ball from the goalkeeper and, with Smalling getting more and more comfortable on the ball, the attack-minded full-backs would be required to hug the touchline and stretch stubborn defences.
THE MODERN-DAY MASTERPIECE (3-4-1-2)
8Two attacking wing-backs, pace up front and the perfect balance in midfieldTeams such as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea (when managed by Antonio Conte) have used variations of the formation above to devastating effect in recent Premier League seasons. The secret to success here is pushing the wing-backs high up the pitch to effectively create an overload in between the lines of the opposition. The holding midfielders can drop wide to cover them if caught upfield, but three no-nonsense centre-halves also provide formidable cover.England also played in a similar style at the World Cup, with Jordan Henderson the midfield linchpin. With all due respect to the Liverpool skipper, Rakitic has a far greater skillset on the ball and his passing range is superior – making him the playmaker of this team.

The other two players named in the report are Kalidou Koulibaly and Ivan Rakitic. The former is amongst the best centre-halves in the world, and if we could acquire him and sit him in there alongside Victor Lindelof, that would be pretty special. As for Rakitic, I like him but I'm not sure he's an upgrade on what we already have.
