Liverpool have been playing too SAFE where has Shaqiri gone? – Danny Murphys Merseyside derby verdict on talkSPORT
Danny Murphy believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has played it safe in recent games and has questioned why Xherdan Shaqiri has suddenly stopped playing. The Reds lost vital ground in the Premier League race this weekend as Sundays 0-0 draw with Everton allowed Manchester City to move into top spot.Frustration appeared to get the better of Klopp after the final whistle as he bit back at the media over some of their questioning. Is Jurgen Klopp feeling the heat of the Premier League title race?4

The German was particularly peeved with a reporter who suggested the Reds needed to go for the jugular more against Everton, and that the manager had not taken enough risks in recent games; Liverpool have drawn five of their last seven matches in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp after 0-0 draw at Everton

“Im really, really disappointed about your question,” said the German.“We don’t play PlayStation. Do you think we didn’t take enough risks?“There’s not a moment where we say, ‘Come on now, throw everything in that direction’. You cannot play in the Premier League like that.“We take all the risks but you cannot take more than 100 per cent risk, going nuts.I don’t think I have to give my players advice because they know it already. We are not little boys any more.”Murphy, however, believes the journalists line of questioning was fair and says Klopp should have been more attacking-minded in his substitutions.Nearly all the time Liverpool play to win – they play on the front foot, press high and play attacking football, the former Reds midfielder told talkSPORT host Jim White.Jurgen Klopp deserves great credit for that and thats why the fans love him and enjoy watching Liverpool play. But over the last couple of weeks where you could argue where he hasnt quite gone for it and hes been a bit cautious, is with his substitutions.Liverpool will wonder how they failed to win the game against Everton4

Milner for Gini Wijnaldum, like-for-like, I didnt see any logic in that. You need someone to come a create a goal or score a goal.Playing Origi on the left, he didnt contribute in the game and he could have brought Shaqiri on for him.Although he did bring Firmino on, he could have changed it and taken one midfielder off and put another attacking minded player on, like Shaqiri, when Gini came off.So it was a far question from the journalist. Many Reds fans reacted with confusion and anger when Shaqiri was left on the bench for another crucial game.Having started with amidfield trio of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum, and with Divock Origi getting a surprise start on the wing, it was clear the Reds needed more cutting edge in the second half against Everton and supporters were crying out for Shaqiri to come on.Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice in a 3-1 win over Man United in December, but has played sparingly since then4
Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice in a 3-1 win over Man United in December, but has played sparingly since then
But they were left disappointed, with Klopp instead deciding to bring on James Milner and Adam Lallana with the Reds searching for a late winner.Shaqiri is a bit of a strange one for me, added Murphy.Hes been tremendous in the games hes come on. Hes contributed goals and assists and his attitude has been exemplary. But all of a sudden, from nowhere, Origi and Sturridge have been chosen ahead of him to come on in big games, where you need someone to open up a defence. Its not like Shaqiri is a young lad, hes played in World Cups and European Championships and shone. The big games dont scare him, if anything he thrives on them, he came on against United and won Liverpool the game.So unless theres been a fall out, or maybe hes just not training very well, I dont know, but what I do know, is that asking Jurgen Klopp about his lack of risks is fair enough.Liverpools midfield have got five goals between them this season thats not good enough especially when you think of Citys midfield.Xherdan Shaqiri has six goals and three assists for Liverpool this season4
Xherdan Shaqiri has six goals and three assists for Liverpool this season
If I had only got five goals in a season from midfield, I wouldnt expect to be playing.Klopp plays a certain way where he likes box-to-box players, he likes tenacity, he likes energy, but I tell you who had been a miss for Liverpool Oxlade-Chamberlain.I do think Liverpool are lacking a David Silva-like player. They had one of those in Coutinho, and Shaqiri came into do that type of thing, but hes not been given the time!

The other two players named in the report are Kalidou Koulibaly and Ivan Rakitic. The former is amongst the best centre-halves in the world, and if we could acquire him and sit him in there alongside Victor Lindelof, that would be pretty special. As for Rakitic, I like him but I'm not sure he's an upgrade on what we already have.
